200 people attack ED team in Bengal
Had come to raid TMC leader's house; Heads of officers were broken, CRPF was chased away. An ED team was attacked on Friday morning (January 5) in Sandeshkhali village of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. The attackers also vandalized the team's vehicles. Also chased away the CRPA soldiers.
The attack took place when the team had come to raid the Bongaon residence of TMC leader Sheikh Shahjahan and former Bongaon Municipality Chairman Shankar Aadhya in the ration scam case.
According to the ED official, a mob of 200 people suddenly surrounded the team and attacked. Our vehicles were also vandalized.
According to the officer, the assistant director of ED was also included in the team that came to conduct the raid. The mob also broke his car. However, TMC leader SK Shahjahan has been arrested.
First Forest Minister Jyotipriya Malik has been arrested
ED had raided the premises of Mamata government's Forest Minister Jyotipriya Malik on 26 October 2023 in the alleged ration scam case. After this, he was arrested on 27 October. Jyotipriya Malik was holding the charge of Food Minister before becoming Forest Minister.
Before Jyotipriya's arrest, ED had arrested rice mill owner Bakibur Rahman in the same case. Rehman, who started his career as a rice mill owner in 2004, had set up three more companies in the next two years. According to ED officials, Rehman allegedly created several shell companies and siphoned off the money.
TMC leader arrested in teacher recruitment scam
On July 23, 2022, ED arrested Parth from the government residence in Kolkata on charges of money laundering in the teacher recruitment scam. Parth is accused of taking money wrongly in exchange for giving a job while he was a minister. 5 days after Parth's arrest, Mamata Banerjee dismissed him from the cabinet.
ED had raided the two flats of Parth's close friend Arpita on July 23 and July 28. In this action, Rs 49 crore cash was recovered from his flats. At present both are in jail.
