TMC leader gets bail from SC in cattle smuggling case, was in jail for two years
A bench of Supreme Court Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice SC Sharma today granted bail to Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mandal. The case is related to the India-Bangladesh border cattle smuggling scam. Anubrata Mandal has been in jail for the last two years. The court directed Mandal to cooperate in the investigation and submit his passport.

The SC on Tuesday granted bail to TMC leader Anubrata Mandal in the cattle smuggling case. A bench of Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice SC Sharma granted relief to Mandal on the grounds that the hearing of the case would take time and that he has been in jail for two years.
The apex court directed Mandal to cooperate in the investigation and surrender his passport. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Mandal, submitted that four charge sheets have been filed in the case and all the accused except the Trinamool leader Mandal are out of jail.
Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, appearing for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), opposed the bail plea and said Mandal was a very influential person and was involved in tampering with evidence.
The CBI had claimed that Mandal was the mastermind behind cattle smuggling from West Bengal's Birbhum district to Bangladesh. However, Mandal's counsel had rejected the allegations and said no evidence had been found in this regard.
