The Supreme Court has rejected the petition filed by telecom companies against the government's decision. The top court said that these decisions are as per the rules and have been taken on the basis of experts' opinion. Let us inform that in its decision dated September 15, 2021, the government has decided to cancel the relief given to telecom companies. After which the telecom companies approached the court to cancel this decision of the government.

Let us tell you that telecom companies are struggling to pay Rs 93,520 crore of dues related to Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR). However, the Supreme Court gave relief to the companies on September 1, 2020, giving them a period of 10 years to repay their dues to the government.

A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan said that there is no doubt that the apex court by its judgment had issued some directions with respect to the telecom sector, but with the huge increase in data consumption, online education, work from home etc. Also, reform measures were taken in the backdrop of COVID-19 challenges. Which was necessary to increase broadband and telecom connectivity.

The bench said that the petition filed by petitioner Anshul Gupta has no basis. The top court said that any interference at this stage will not only create uncertainty in the implementation of the rule but will also put the rule in jeopardy.
