NGT rejects SPG's petition to extend the period of PM's three vehicles, this is the reason

The Special Protection Group (SPG) demanded that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) extend the registration of three diesel-powered special armoured vehicles that are necessary for the Prime Minister's protection. The NGT rejected this request.

In an order dated March 22, the NGT's main bench, which consists of expert member Dr A Senthil Vel and Chairman Justice Prakash Srivastava, denied the SPG's application. He refused it, citing the October 2018 Supreme Court order as justification. This prohibited the use of diesel vehicles older than ten years on Delhi-NCR roads.

The bench said, "We are cognizant of the fact that these three vehicles are special purpose vehicles which are not generally available. And these vehicles have moved very rarely in the last 10 years and are required for the specific purpose of protecting the Prime Minister." But given the order of the Hon'ble Supreme Court dated 29.10.2018... the petition filed... cannot be allowed" and is "dismissed accordingly."

The SPG before the NGT had sought an order to "allow the Transport Department, Delhi Government/Registration Authority to extend the period of registration of Special Armored Vehicles (03 Nos.) by five years i.e. up to 23/12/2029". The SPG said that "these vehicles are an essential and integral part of the technical logistics of the Special Protection Group."

According to the order, the three Renault MD-5 special armoured vehicles manufactured in 2013 and registered in December 2014 have covered just 6,000 km, 9,500 km and 15,000 km respectively in the last 9 years. “Because they are being used only for specific strategic purposes.”

Although its registration is for 15 years till December 2029, as per the 2018 order of the Supreme Court, the registration of these vehicles will be cancelled in December 2024 upon completion of 10 years.
