Naga leaders have made a big claim amidst the debate on the issue of UCC in the country at this time. Talking to the media, he has said that in a meeting held with Home Minister Amit Shah recently, he (Amit Shah) assured him that Christians and tribals in Nagaland would be kept out of the Uniform Civil Code. Along with this, he also discussed Section 371 (A) applicable in Nagaland.
Last Wednesday, a 12-member Naga delegation led by Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio met Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi. During this, he made Shah aware of his concerns regarding UCC. On this, the Home Minister assured him that the Law Commission was considering keeping out the Christian community and some tribals from the proposed UCC. Along with this, various concerns of the state including the lack of progress in Indo-Naga peace talks were also talked about.
Talking to the media after the meeting, Nagaland government spokesman KG Kenye said that we apprised the home minister of Article 371 (A), which is applicable to Nagaland, and the 16-point agreement signed between the Naga tribes and the Indian government in July 1960. based on.
The freedoms we exercise in our religious and cultural practices are in accordance with this agreement. Except in certain cases, it cannot be obstructed by any central law passed by the Parliament. Only if such a law is passed by the State Legislature as a resolution, it can apply to the State of Nagaland.
Government spokesperson Kenye said that the people of Nagaland are very upset after the notification issued by the Law Commission. If the UCC is extended to Nagaland, it calls into question the validity of Article 371(A), the only bridge between mainland India and the Naga people.
He pointed out that in the past, the provisions of the Article have not been followed in letter and spirit, especially with regard to the use of land and resources in the State, which can only be used by the Naga people.
According to media reports, the Naga leader looked happy after the meeting and assurance from the Home Minister. Speaking to the media, a government spokesperson said, "We have been assured by the Home Minister that the Law Commission is considering the exclusion of Christians and certain tribal communities (in Nagaland) from the purview of the UCC."
Along with this, he also assured us about the 16-point agreement of the year 1960. Based on which Nagaland was granted statehood in December 1963, Naga customary laws, socio-religious practices, as well as protect land and resources.
