Information about salt, sugar will have to be given in big letters on food packets; Changed rule approved

Food regulator FSSAI will make providing information regarding salt, sugar, and fat in big fonts and bold letters on food packets mandatory. The regulator on Saturday allowed changes in labeling rules for this. Now, suggestions and objections against this would be invited from all stakeholders by bringing a draft notification for this amendment.

In its statement, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India said this proposal on providing nutritional information on the packet has already been approved. Under the chairmanship of FSSAI Chairman Apoorva Chandra, an amendment in this regard was deliberated upon. According to the regulator, it is aimed at empowering the consumer to understand the nutritional value of the product for better decision-making.
