The Income Tax Department has made a record seizure of cash and jewelry worth Rs 1100 crore during the Lok Sabha elections. According to sources, till May 30, 2024, the department has seized cash and jewelry worth about Rs 1100 crore, which is 182 percent more than the Rs 390 crore seized during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

On March 16, the day the Election Commission of India announced the dates for the Lok Sabha elections, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) went into effect throughout the nation. Since then, the Income Tax Department has kept a close eye on and seized unreported funds and valuables that might have an impact on elections.

According to sources, Delhi and Karnataka top the list of states with the highest seizures. Cash and jewelry worth more than Rs 200 crore was seized in both the states. Tamil Nadu is in second place, where cash and jewelry worth Rs 150 crore were seized. In Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha, cash and jewelry worth more than Rs 100 crore were seized.
