HCG Turns Everyday Mirrors into Early Awareness Tools with #MirrorsDontLie Campaign

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], March 16: As part of this year’s International Women’s Day theme #GiveToGain, HealthCare Global (HCG), India’s largest dedicated cancer care network, has launched #MirrorsDontLie, a nationwide awareness campaign encouraging women to take a few minutes each month to check for changes in their breasts and stay alert to early signs of breast cancer, in line with global “breast awareness” guidance from leading cancer organisations.

Built around a simple everyday habit, the campaign urges women to use the moment they spend in front of a mirror as a reminder to stay aware of changes in their breasts and seek timely medical advice if something unusual is noticed.

The initiative will be rolled out across HCG’s network of 24 hospitals in 21 cities, focusing on women between the ages of 30 and 60, a group where breast awareness and early detection can significantly influence treatment outcomes.

“For over 35 years, HCG has focused on helping people detect cancer earlier and treat it better,” said Manu Sankar Das, Chief Marketing Officer, HealthCare Global (HCG). “This Women’s Day, under the theme #GiveToGain, we want to encourage women to give a few minutes to themselves and gain the advantage of early awareness and timely diagnosis. Through #MirrorsDontLie, we are trying to anchor that awareness in something very familiar — the mirror.”

Breast cancer is currently the most common cancer among women in India, with estimates from the World Health Organization and analyses published in The Lancet indicating close to two lakh new cases annually. A large proportion of Indian women are still diagnosed at advanced stages, contributing to higher mortality rates compared to many high-income countries.

“Many global cancer organisations now emphasise the importance of breast awareness, understanding what is normal for your own breasts so you can recognise a change early,” said Dr. Mahesh Bandimegal, Sr Consultant – Surgical Oncology, specialised in breast Surgery, HCG Cancer Hospital. “Self-checks are not a replacement for clinical examinations or mammography, but they can be an important first step that prompts women to seek medical advice earlier.”

As part of the campaign, HCG has introduced a Mirror-Integrated Breast Awareness Guide, designed to be placed alongside a mirror. The compact guide provides simple prompts to help women check for visible or physical changes in the breasts.

The guide includes reminders on key warning signs such as new lumps, skin dimpling, swelling, nipple inversion, unusual discharge or persistent pain, along with prompts encouraging women to take a brief “mirror minute” each month.

HCG doctors advise women to stay familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel, take a few minutes regularly to check for any changes, and consult a qualified doctor promptly if something unusual is noticed.

Experts note that late diagnosis remains a major contributor to breast cancer mortality in India, while early detection significantly improves survival outcomes and expands treatment options.

Through #MirrorsDontLie, HCG hopes to make breast awareness easier and more approachable by embedding it into everyday routines.

A mirror reflects more than appearance; it can also remind women to notice changes early and seek timely medical care.
