Food regulator FSSAI has stressed on ensuring safe food to students and has asked state officials to provide training to those handling food items in hostels and university canteens.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) CEO G Kamala Vardhan Rao on Saturday addressed the 42nd meeting of the Central Advisory Committee (CAC) in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. He urged the states and union territories to create awareness about food security.

During the meeting, he directed the Food Safety Commissioners of states and Union Territories to organize training programs for food handlers in student hostels and canteens of universities to ensure safe and hygienic food for students, FSSAI said in a statement. .
 
The CEO called upon the Food Safety Commissioner to upgrade the current food testing infrastructure and increase the number of food testing laboratories in the country. Further, Rao encouraged states and union territories to make efforts to monitor milk, milk products and sweets as the festival season approaches.

He talked about the importance of promoting the modernization initiative of 100 Food Street. The meeting was attended by more than fifty officials including Commissioners of Food Safety (CFS), representatives of States and Union Territories, senior officials of FSSAI and nodal ministries and members representing food industry, consumers, agriculture, laboratories and research bodies.
