Dull start in the stock market; Sensex falls 300 points, Nifty below 21500

In early trading at around 9.20 am, BSE Sensex was seen trading at 71,289 with a fall of 194 points or 0.27%, while Nifty was trading at 21,412 with a fall of 44 points or 0.21%.

After last week's record jump in the stock market, huge profit-booking was seen on Monday. During this period the Sensex went down by 300 points. On the other hand, Nifty also went down below 21450 with weakness. Earlier on Friday, the Sensex had climbed 969 points and closed at 71,483.

After hitting record highs for most of this month, Indian stock indices opened lower on Monday, trailing Asian peers ahead of Japan's monetary policy decision on Tuesday.

In early trade at around 9.20 am, BSE Sensex was trading at 71,289 with a fall of 194 points or 0.27%, while Nifty was trading at 21,412 with a fall of 44 points or 0.21%.

Among Sensex companies, JSW Steel, ITC, Mahindra & Mahindra, Power Grid, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank were seen trading with losses. While Titan, Sun Pharma, Nestle and Bajaj Finance opened with gains. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders shares opened 4.6% higher. The company signed an individual shipbuilding contract worth approximately $42 million with a European customer.

Shares of Zee Entertainment Enterprises fell more than 4% as the firm sought to extend the deadline for the merger with the Indian arm of Japan's Sony Group to give effect to the plan.
