Cyclone Michong will hit Andhra Pradesh today

Winds will blow at 110 kilometers per hour, red alert in 8 districts; 8 died in Chennai. Cyclone Michong, which emerged from the Bay of Bengal on December 2, will hit between Nellore-Machilipatnam near Bapatla in Andhra Pradesh at 1 pm today. According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), winds can blow at a speed of 90 to 110 kilometers per hour (KMPH) during this period.

There is high alert in Andhra Pradesh regarding cyclone. The state government has issued a red alert in Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema and Kakinada districts. 5 teams each of NDRF and SDRF are deployed in these 8 districts.

On the other hand, there was a decrease in rainfall in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. Monday's storm caused a lot of destruction in Chennai. 8 people died in this. At the same time, flights from Chennai Airport, which were closed for the last 16 hours, have started again.

Cyclone Michong caused a lot of devastation in Tamil Nadu before moving towards Andhra Pradesh. Chennai received about 400-500 mm of rain since Sunday morning, 3 December. According to the Water Supply Minister of Tamil Nadu, Chennai received such rain for the first time in 70-80 years. So far 5 people have died.

204 trains and 70 flights have been canceled in Tamil Nadu due to the storm. 21 NDRF teams are deployed in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry. Apart from this, ships and aircraft of Coast Guard, Army and Navy have been kept on standby.

  • Andhra Pradesh: IMD has issued a warning of heavy rain with thunderstorm in Andhra Pradesh till Wednesday. Schools and colleges are closed on 5 December due to the storm. Tirupati Airport Director KM Basavaraju said that all flights were canceled on Monday due to bad weather. These included 14 scheduled and one non-scheduled flights.
  • Odisha: Light rain is occurring in many districts of Odisha. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rain till December 6. Orange alert has been issued for Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam districts for December 4 and 5. These districts may receive 2.75 to 4.55 inches of rain.
  • Puducherry-Telangana: In view of the storm, Puducherry government has also issued an alert. Section 144 has been imposed around the marine areas of Puducherry. People have been instructed not to go to coastal areas from 7 pm on 3 December to 6 pm on 5 December. Telangana administration has also issued a red alert regarding the storm.
  • Jharkhand-Chhattisgarh: Light to moderate rain is possible over Karnataka, West Bengal, parts of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. Light rain may occur at 1 or 2 places over Vidarbha, Telangana, Karnataka, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Kerala.

Myanmar named storm Michong

Myanmar has given the name Michaung to the storm. It means strength and flexibility. Michong will be the first typhoon to cross the coast in two years since Cyclone Gulab in September 2021. Michong Cyclone is the fourth storm to form in the Bay of Bengal and the sixth in the Indian Ocean in the year 2023.
